Information Architecture

Successful website and software design and development needs planning. One of, if not the most, important areas that needs to be planned is the site structure, which we refer to as Information Architecture (IA).
The process of developing an information architecture of a website or piece of software should encompass the way in which data is structured, captured and prioritised. Information (typically website content) is categorised into a coherent structure intended to be easy for the target audience to understand quickly. The complexity of a website’s information architecture depends on the complexity of the site itself, whether there are registered users and how many different groups of users the site deals with.
Often we will employ the following methods in establishing the information architecture of a project:
- Sitemaps and Outlines
- Spoke diagrams (especially useful for organising user groups)
- Card sorts (for direct user input)
